He does however, tell the story humbly of how he brought the first lavender seeds planted in the United States from France over in his boot socks. Apparently, he wanted to keep them close by although he does say this was because he had no room in his luggage. In 1989, the seeds were brought back from a trip to France. The species brought was Lavundula angustifolia; a species with the most health-supporting benefits.
